Bloemfontein - A policeman was arrested in Kopanong on Monday for the murder of his wife and son, Free State police said.
Inspector Harry Nagel said the 41-year-old police inspector from the Mangaung police crime prevention unit was arrested during the early hours of Monday morning at his wife's house.
"The police were alerted early this morning and a hostage negotiator convinced the policeman to open the door."
The man did not resist arrest.
The bodies of his wife, 25, and son, eight, were discovered inside the house, each with two bullet wounds.
The policeman was expected to appear in court soon on two murder charges.
Free State police head, Commissioner Amon Mashigo, condemned the incident and urged police officers to use internal support structures whenever they had personal problems.
