Cop held for man's death while in custody

2012-02-21 22:43

Johannesburg - A police sergeant has been arrested for the death of a Boksburg man in police custody, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said on Tuesday.

"This arrest follows an investigation by the ICD which was started soon after the incident was reported," spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

The Beeld reported on Monday that Rean Ramdin, 29, died after he was shot by a policeman after being arrested during a raid at Presley's nightclub in Boksburg.

According to the report he was handcuffed when he was shot. The family had searched for Ramdin after he failed to return home. They identified his body at the Springs mortuary.

Dlamini said police claimed they were called to the club after the Ramdin was allegedly found with drugs.

"They took Mr Ramdin away in a police vehicle after handcuffing him. It is alleged that he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away," said Dlamini.

"The police shot and killed him after he allegedly ignored warning shots."

The 39-year-old officer was expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

So the police shot at an unarmed, handcuffd man? I wonder what immediate danger he posed to society, and why on earth couldn't they chase and catch a possibly intoxicated individual....

And still Bheki Cele denies telling them to "shoot to kill".

Please don't lose the docket now boys?

Hope this cop gets life. Thug cops who are not able to act like respectable human beings have no place in society or the police force. Og , if only we had the death penalty. So sad the lawyers are the bad people who wanted it removed because a dead person cannot commit crime and so they will not get business. You do not destroy your stock.

Kevin you are right i am so sick of seeing them take there position of power and abuse it. There is this cop in George who is quiet high up. He is so fat that the only thing he can do is beat up homeless people that are sleeping. He is corrupt and should be taken off the service but still remains there.

The cops' brutality and ignorance of the law should be enough of a deterrent to commit crime. 2 similar incidents within a week. Lord help us.

Change the name of the SAPS to the Waffen SS, or maybe the Gestapo, two names that would be more fitting seeing as they are more of a threat to the South African public than the criminals are!!!. Oh wait, they are the criminals, bunch of fat lazy swines hyped up on their own self importance and their perceived power over the lowly average citizen.

Again.. Another killing by our wonderful police..Makes you want to puke...

I couldn't agree with your more Sizwe. The only danger we have in this Country is by the looks of it, the SAP. What a cowardice act, hiding behind a badge with a gun in their hands. Makes you wonder what will become of this case, another one under the rug!!!!!

shoot to kill, Mr Cele told them, this is what happens.

  • Reshma - 2012-02-22 19:37

So the cop got out on R2500 bail. He says it was an accident and he will plead not guilty. Don't they go for training to avoid accidents. So what will happen if an ordinary citizen shoots a cop accidentally? can that person also plead not guilty (they will be locked up immediately and not be given bail). He must face up to what he did. GUILTY as charged, GUILTY. He should be charged for what he has done.Don't play with a toy if you can't use it....the docket will definitely go missing.

Before you pass judgement, all the facts of the above case have not been put forward in this article. yet another conclusion based the medias ability to exaggerate on individual facts and not the situation as a whole. Its up to the IDC to build a case and present that case before a court of law. The legal system still promotes Innocent until proven guilty

The said shooter is out on R2000 bail - that is what a life is worth in South Africa.
