Johannesburg - A policeman accused of shooting dead a student appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday, said police watchdog IPID.

The case against the 30-year-old officer was postponed to 3 June, when he was expected to apply for bail, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.

Dlamini said he did not have the officer's name.

According to Dlamini the policeman allegedly shot dead 22-year-old Gopolang Ngobeni in Randfontein on 25 May.

He and four other Tshwane University of Technology students were travelling from the Soshanguve campus to a funeral when they got lost and decided to follow a security company's vehicle.

"After the security vehicle made a U-turn at a cul-de-sac, the students also made a U-turn. While driving towards a Caltex garage with the intention of asking for directions, another security vehicle from the same company cut in front of them," said Dlamini.

"Both security vehicles stopped next to a marked [police] vehicle. The students drove on to the filling station. It is alleged that within a short space of time, the police vehicle, with its blue light on, as well as the security vehicles, followed the students to the filling station," said Dlamini.

The police ordered the group to get out of the vehicle.

A policeman shot Ngobeni with an R5 rifle while the student was getting out of the car.

He died on the scene.

The vehicle the students were travelling in was searched and nothing illegal was found. The policeman was arrested and charged with murder.
