Cop in court on bribery charge

Johannesburg - A policeman accused of accepting a R1 000 bribe to issue clearance certificates for two vehicles, appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Cape Town on Monday.

Thuso Mapheele, appeared before Magistrate Amrith Chabillal, who postponed the case to April 12.

It is alleged that he received the R1 000 bribe from a man, Elton Abrahams, at a petrol service station in Bonteheuwel, on the Cape Flats in September, 2009.

The next day he allegedly issued clearance certificates for a Nissan Sentra and a Volkswagen Microbus to Shawn Hendricks, without examining the vehicles.

Mapheele faces charges of corruption and fraud.
