Pietermaritzburg - A Pietermaritzburg police officer was in a stable condition in hospital after being shot at by a group of robbers in Eastwood, police said on Wednesday.

At around 20:50 on Tuesday seven men armed with rifles robbed a man of an undisclosed amount of cash, cellphones and computer equipment at his business on Cardiff road, Eastwood, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

A security guard was also robbed of his firearm when responding to the crime. Police officers were shot at when they arrived at the scene, Naicker said.

"One police official was shot and injured. Suspects fled when police returned fire."

A case of business robbery and attempted murder was opened. No arrests have yet been made, Naicker said.
