Johannesburg - A 43-year-old policeman was jailed for ten years by the Free State High Court sitting in Harrismith on Thursday for murdering his 36-year-old mistress at his home in Phuthaditjhaba, said the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD).
On the day of the incident, Warrant Officer Motlalepule Amos Motaung's child arrived home from school to find a foot protruding from under a bed, said ICD spokesman Moses Dlamini.
The child called Motaung's wife who rushed home to find the body of Mavis Mofokeng under the bed, her face covered with a plastic bag.
In a separate case in the Free State, a policeman was fined R4 000, or a year imprisonment, by the Clocolan Magistrate's Court for assaulting relatives in a burial dispute.
Warrant Officer Daniel Tau was involved in a family dispute over the burial of a relative and over who was her rightful heir, said Dlamini.
He assaulted his relatives when they refused to hand over the deceased's identity document.
He assaulted them again at the Clocolan police station, where he was based, when they went there to open an assault case against him, Dlamini said.
