Johannesburg - A 40-year-old Soweto policeman was shot dead and a female police reservist injured when men they were about to search opened fire on them early on Tuesday morning, Gauteng police said.
Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini said they had stopped two men who had aroused their suspicions while they were on patrol near Jabulani hostel.
As they tried to carry out a search, the men produced a firearm and shot the police inspector in the upper body and the reservist twice in the buttocks.
The men ran into the hostel, leaving the policeman to die outside.
The reservist is recovering in Leratong Hospital on the West Rand, while police and hostel managers are working to track the killers, Dlamini said.
The police's annual report for the period ending March 2007 noted that 769 police officers were attacked and 108 killed.
