Johannesburg - A police officer was killed and another was injured in a car accident on the R503 road between Mahikeng and Lichtenburg, the North West transport department said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Shuping Sebolecwe said the driver of the car lost control of the bakkie while trying to overtake a truck on Friday evening.

"According to traffic authorities at the scene, the driver realised that there was an oncoming vehicle ahead which allegedly caused him to lose control," he said in a statement.

"The driver survived with critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital by the emergency services."

North West community safety and transport management MEC Gaoage Molapisi said the government was losing assets due to road accidents.

He said motorists needed to be observant, cautious and always adhere to road rules.
