Port Elizabeth - A police officer was killed in Zwide on Wednesday night by attackers who hijacked three cars and robbed a number of police officers, police said on Thursday.
Student constable Nkosinathi Ndolomane, 32, died when a police vehicle used to transport Bethelsdorp station members home was fired at, said spokesperson superintendent Johann van Greunen.
The attackers stopped next to the vehicle and one man got out and starting shooting, said Van Greunen.
"Constable Ndolomane died on the scene."
Van Greunen said the group started the evening by hijacking a white BMW in Motherwell after 17:00.
The car was used to rob two Kwazakhele police officers of their bullet-proof vests and a police radio.
The three then dumped the white BMW in Soweto-on-Sea and hijacked a maroon BMW that was used in Ndolomane's killing in Zwide.
The three stole two police-issue 9mm pistols from Ndolomane and his passenger, who had pretended to be shot, and sped away in the maroon BMW.
They then lost control of the car and crashed into the wall of a house nearby.
Soon afterwards, wearing the bullet-proof vests stolen in Kwazakhele earlier, they hijacked a VW Golf.
The three hijacked cars, a pistol that was not one of the police pistols stolen earlier in Zwide, and a police radio were found abandoned.
"I think they were after firearms and bullet-proof vests," said Van Greunen.
No arrests have been made.
