Cop one of 14 killed in Free State

Bloemfontein - A policeman was one of 14 people stabbed to death in the Free State at the weekend, police said on Monday.

The 49-year-old policeman was based in Thabong, spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said.

"His body was discovered lying in the street with stab wounds yesterday [Sunday]."

Most of the 14 dead were killed in fights that started in taverns.

"The bodies were discovered either before midnight on Friday and Saturday, or in the early hours of the mornings in what appears to be incidents from the previous night."

Another victim, a 30-year-old man, was found in Mangaung's Bloemspruit Phase Three on Saturday around 07:00.

Similar cases were reported in Harrismith, Bloemfontein, Bronville, Makwane, Thabong, Namahadi, Mafube, Mangaung, and Phuthaditjhaba.

Three men had been arrested so far.
