Johannesburg - A Viljoenskroon man was sentenced to an effective life term by the Kroonstad Regional Court on Thursday for posing as a policeman to get into the home of an 81-year-old woman and raping her, Free State police said.
Thato Ntepe, 29, was sentenced to 15 years' for house breaking, one year for impersonating a police officer, and 25 years' for rape, to run concurrently, said Motantsi Makhele.
He was arrested at a tavern in Viljoenskroon on the evening of August 10, nine days after the incident and made a confession to a magistrate, said Makhele.
He later pleaded guilty to the crimes.
Free State police commissioner Amon Mashigo commended the investigating officer and the judicial system on a "job well done". He said Free State police would make it their business to "remove elements like this one" from communities.
The sentence was a warning that no stone would be left unturned when it came to crimes affecting women and children in the province.
