Durban - A decision by police to deploy more units to Durban's troubled KwaMashu hostels was welcomed by the National Freedom Party (NFP) on Wednesday.

"We... hope they will rid the hostel of guns and other criminals who are using it as a place to hide from the law," NFP president Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi said.

The deployment of the police to the area follows the shooting of three NFP members last week, one of whom died, as well as the killing of an IFP member.

Sifiso Vincent Khumalo, the IFP Youth Brigade's chairperson in KwaMashu, was arrested for attempted murder in connection with the attack on Nomusa Nhlenyama and Zama Sithole while they were campaigning.

Police have yet to arrest anyone in connection with killing of NFP Women's Movement branch chairwoman Ntombi Mzila, 48, and the IFP Women's Brigade branch leader Nonhlanhla Biyela.

Units from the Eastern Cape as well as Western Cape would be deployed to the area in the run up to the 7 May election.

KaMagwaza-Msibi urged police to make arrests in the other cases.

"As the NFP we are prepared to work with police and the IEC [Independent Electoral Commission] towards ensuring that action is taken against people who are intent on disrupting the coming elections and rendering them unfair and not free," she said.
