Johannesburg - The case against a police constable accused of raping an awaiting-trial prisoner was postponed by the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, police said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said 31-year-old Langalethu Dumakude of the Glendale police was expected to make a formal bail application on January 5.

Dumakude allegedly raped a 32-year-old woman who was arrested for assault.

A police officer said he heard strange sounds coming from the holding cells and rushed to investigate. The woman told him she had been raped at gun-point by Dumakude.
