Durban - A policeman from the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast apparently shot his wife in the stomach at the weekend when she got up in the night to go to the toilet and he thought she was an intruder.
An inspector at Gingindlovu police station fired the shot on Friday night shortly before midnight, when his wife was returning to bed from the bathroom, said captain Jabulani Mdletshe.
He said the couple were having alterations done at their house and there was no glass in one of the windows.
The policeman apparently grabbed his private pistol and fired at what he thought was an intruder.
Mdletshe said a docket of attempted murder had been opened and the pistol confiscated.
The woman is in a stable condition in a Durban hospital.
