Durban - A policeman was shot dead in his driveway in Isipingo, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

“Last night [Wednesday] as he was driving [into] his driveway he went to greet neighbours across the road and came across three men who asked him for directions," said Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

"When he turned around he was shot dead, twice in the chest and once in the neck.”

He said Lieutenant Colonel Francis Pillay, 50, worked for the police unit dealing with police disciplinary cases.

Pillay was the former station commander of KwaMakhutha police station. He had also worked for the detectives unit in Isipingo.

He was shot while his wife was waiting for him in the car, said Mdunge.

“Police have opened a murder case. The motive of the killing at this stage is unknown,” said Mdunge.
