Cop shot for hanging on to gun

White River - A police constable was shot dead after he refused to hand his weapon to robbers in Kabokweni near here, said Mpumalanga police on Sunday.

Superintendent Benjamin Bhembe said the constable was parked outside a friend's home on Saturday when three men approached his vehicle and demanded his firearm.

The constable refused to hand over the weapon, and the man nearest the policeman drew his weapon and shot the policeman in the chest.

Died at the car

Bhembe said: "He had his hand on his chest when he was shot, and it appears the bullet went through his hand and into his chest."

The constable died at the car.

The men took the policeman's firearm and fled.

They are still at large.
