Cop who demanded bribe arrested

2012-02-15 14:24

Polokwane - A police constable was arrested in Valdezia on Wednesday when a man accused of cigarette smuggling claimed he demanded a bribe, Limpopo police said.

The policeman stopped a vehicle delivering smuggled cigarettes, but instead of arresting the smuggler demanded a R35 000 bribe, said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The smuggler was released when he got a relative to deliver the money. He later reported the matter to the police.

On finding out that a case had been opened, the policeman is believed to have asked someone to return R10 000 to the smuggler, possibly in the hope he would withdraw the complaint.

The policeman was arrested on suspicion of corruption and defeating the ends of justice and was expected to appear in the Waterval Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Mulaudzi said the alleged smuggler would also be investigated, even though he was witness. He had not been arrested.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe condemned police involvement in crime and said it would be exposed and dealt with.

R35 000? At least in Joburg they only try solicit bribes relative to the possible fine... Goes something like this: Fine is R600. Can you afford R600. No. How much can you afford? Write out the ticket, I broke the law. I'll let you off with a warning this time but next time you can buy me lunch.

haha same happened to us!! He tried really hard to get us to read between the lines, but I can be very stupid if I need to be. He eventually gave up and let us go.

Depends on where you go to in Jhb, we got pulled over just outside the Grand in Rivonia. When the idiot cop demanded R2000 I asked him where his ID tag was, so he told us to go. It is easy, when a cop pull you over and got his name tag, he is honest, if you don't wear his name tag, he wants bribes.

Well think about it this way. The underpaid cop got the money. If the suspect went to court he would have received a similar fine and the money would have gone to the Government who in turn would have used same to buy luxury vehicles and the cop would still be underpaid :)

Why wait to get caught when you can hire a cop to drive the contraband laden vehicle for you at a fraction of the bribe demanded ?
