Cope MP roasted over in-flight conduct

2012-07-09 14:47

Johannesburg - Cope MP Dirk Feldman has been roundly roasted after he reportedly tried to open the door of an SAA plane in mid-flight while intoxicated on Saturday.

The National Council of Provinces MP was part of a parliamentary delegation en route to India. He was briefly detained by India's security authorities and subsequently sent back home.

Congress of the People chief whip Dennis Bloem said National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu and NCOP chairperson Mninwa Mahlangu had ordered Feldman "to go back home".

"We await a full report on the [incident] from Mr Mahlangu's office and will only be able to communicate further details at a later stage."

He said Cope would, however, not tolerate any misconduct by its MPs.

Bloem told Beeld newspaper on Sunday: "He had too much to drink and they say he lost his inhibitions."

Parliament said in a statement on Sunday a decision on further action would be taken once reports from witnesses and SAA had been received.

ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga said on Monday he had noted the incident with "regret and disappointment".

"Such conduct is unacceptable for a member of Parliament, regardless of the party she or he belongs to, as it undermines the integrity of the institution and the respect our people have in it. It is even worse when it happens during an official overseas trip, as it places this Parliament and the country in a negative light both internationally and at home."

The action taken by Sisulu and Mahlangu had "minimised the negative impact this unfortunate incident might have had on the trip and the entire business of the delegation in that country".

Given the seriousness of this misconduct, a proper investigation should be conducted to ensure appropriate action was taken, he said.

I am fascinated to know why someone should change their name from Mohammed and find the freedom to get legless on an aeroplane, for all of Satan's followers to witness.

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-10 07:38

Dont ground him. Just make sure he is only allowed to fly when the plane is full of politicians.

      schalk.mattheys - 2012-07-10 08:04

Not making excuses for this guy’s behavior, just highlighting a little known fact here, as I am sure most of us have enjoyed the complimentary drinks on long distance flights. At altitude the air in an aircraft cabin is less dense than it is on the ground. This affects the way the body processes oxygen in the blood stream. The aircraft cabin air is also dryer than it is on the ground and this adds to the dehydration passengers can feel while flying. For these reasons alcohol has a much greater affect on the body while flying than it does when on the ground. In some studies, the effects after one drink at high altitude is compared to the effects after three drinks on the ground. A good rule of thumb is to remember that one drink while flying will affect you the same way that three drinks do on the ground. To help make sure your next flight is safe and enjoyable, limit the amount of alcohol you drink and drink plenty of water in between drinks to counteract the dehydration effects of the cabin air. Fly smart

The ANC can point fingers??? How about senior members who buy artworks from a fast food joint and charge it out as burgers??? The Behaviour is equally ridiculous!

      eric.martinsich - 2012-07-09 17:10

Stick to the issue at hand. The ANC did not point fingers but sent a boozer back home.Dirk Feldman you silly man and on a Official trip.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-07-09 19:01

They did point fingers. They are hardly in a position to comment about the Behaviour of others... ""Such conduct is unacceptable for a member of Parliament, regardless of the party she or he belongs to, as it undermines the integrity of the institution and the respect our people have in it. It is even worse when it happens during an official overseas trip, as it places this Parliament and the country in a negative light both internationally and at home."

  • ad.gr.14 - 2012-07-09 15:01

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-09 15:07

Politicians. So he was sent home. Might as well never have gone. The question arises : What is the delegation doing in India and who pays for this? If you can send one member back and not miss his contribution, how many others are just going along for the ride?

      carin.webb.5 - 2012-07-09 15:47

Oh please just get a clue, then comment, all the parties have problems with their members because everybody is human and once in a while make mistakes and this persn will answer to his mistake, but dont insult the other parties and yes viva anc whose members are corrupt and will rather buy a 2 billion rand aeroplane for the president while the majority of its population is living in poverty and there is a aeroplane that can still be use

Theo I'm living here in a squater in Western Cape. And there is nothing that promises for our removal or build better houses, instead your DA is calling us refugees. And you Carin what R2billion aeroplane you are talking about? You fu..en bastards.

      carin.webb.5 - 2012-07-09 16:14

gladstone, under what rock have you been living? Its been in the news all of last week and has been suspended because of all the questions around it, and please do not swear at my comment, i did not insult anybody only stated facts, please go and look up the word respect and then comment like a decent human being

      gladstone.dyonase - 2012-07-09 16:36

Carin the deal was not suspended, but cancelled. Bantu education never taught me about respect. I grew up alone my parents were working in farms, neighbours in mines.

      theo.konings.9 - 2012-07-09 16:40

@Gladstone.I am really sorry you do not have a proper home and / or job but to get a better home someone has to pay for it and if you can not then the tax payer has to.As a tax payer I would happily see tax monies spent on homes for the needy but when Zuma orders a R2 billion rand plane my blood boils. If the Prime Minister of a First World country like England can fly with BAA what right does the ANC have to squander all that money when we have so many desperate people living in squatter camps and by the way I employ and support two families from these camps but I can only do so much.Again I am sorry about your plight. The government has to stop living like privelaged elite and spend money on improving the lives of all the citizens of this country and also attracting investment which their talk of nationalising is not doing.

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-07-09 16:40

These people have no clue what is going on in their own country...yet they are adamant to see the DA as the enemy and the anc as their heroes. Wonder what it will take to see the truth.

      commentator.guy - 2012-07-09 16:51

At least they used to have jobs gladstone... even if it was farm/mining work. Not that I believe any of your story. 99% a white guy trolling the comments section as usual.

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-10 07:22

Kukeba so then we still better off as we have all the better class than the ANC obviously, cause the ANC have all the murderers, rapists, and criminaly insane phsycopaths.

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-07-09 16:53

vernon...it's such a pity that COPE has a few issues....this country is ripe for a 3rd Political party...run as TOTALLY NONRACIAL AND HAVE EDUCATED MEMBERS... WHO WOULD NEVER COMMIT CORRUPT DEEDS.....Suppose you may say.."and then you woke up".Well we can only hope that a young Duplicate of Mandela would appear from somewhere to rescue this beautiful country.

I find this so sad actually - because when one is in a place of honour and importance of rank - YOU need to be ABOVE anything that can point a finger and demean your image as well as your credibility... To be a 'leader' you need tol 'lead' by example and to gain respect you need to show respect.. In other words get drunk - then all who are looking up at you will think it is just OK to do so.. Have no respect for your own self and act like an idiot - then all who are following your actions will deem it OK to do so..

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-07-09 17:09

Reading through the comments one becomes acutely aware of our socio-economic conditioning. (Brainwashing in layman's terms). Most people don't even question the expense, as if it is acceptable to spend a lot of money on the pleasure of a few politicians rather than spending it on improving the development and comfort levels of many poor famiies. If economy is about consumption, a very effective way is to destroy as much as possible in order to rebuild again. There are many planets. Will we ever learn?
