Johannesburg - Two police officers accused of corruption appeared in the
Vierfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, said North West police.
Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the two were granted bail of R500 each and
their case was set to resume on 26 February.
The officers were arrested after they allegedly recruited a member of the
public to provide other officers with information on explosives at Kanana in
Klerksdorp.
The person gave information to police and later filed for an informant claim
payout of R10 000.
The officers allegedly tried to convince the informant to submit a tip-off
concerning more explosives, in another area.
"Controlled action was conducted and both suspects were arrested on
charges of the Contravention and Combating of Corrupt activities Act,"
said Ngubane.
Second offence
He said it was the second time the pair were caught on the wrong side of the
law.
They were arrested and charged with corruption after allegedly taking a
payout of R2 500 from a man who was arrested for stealing a TV last December.
The officers later tried to sell the television and were arrested as they
headed to an ATM machine with a would-be buyer.
An investigation into the incident was underway when the officers were
arrested for the later incident.
Ngubane said the men, both aged 50, had been in the police force for around
25 years.
