Cops caught for licence bribe
Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal police said two traffic officers accused of taking a man's driver's licence and allegedly demanding R2 000 from him to give it back appeared briefly in the Harding Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Dumisani Joel Ncesi, 40, and Nokuthula Mapumulo, 35, would stay in custody until their next court appearance on Friday, spokesperson Jay Naicker said in a statement.
The Hawks arrested the pair on Wednesday.
Members of the Hawks based at Port Shepstone received information on Tuesday that the Harding-based traffic officers had taken the man's driver's licence and were demanding payment for its return.
"Arrangements were made with the driver and a sting operation was set up.
"The man handed over the money to the officers in question and shortly afterwards the Hawks stopped and arrested the officers."
He encouraged people to report corruption to the police.
