Pretoria - Four hundred and ninety three people were arrested for various crimes including robbery, theft and house-breaking during a police operation between Monday and Saturday, Pretoria police said.
Inspector Percy Morokane said during the operation a well known businessman was one of 54 people arrested for dealing in liquor without a valid licence. A total of 43 000 litres were confiscated.
Separately 256 drivers were issued with traffic fines for various violations.
Morokane said that serious and violent crimes had decreased over the last month while there were no vehicles reported to have been hijacked in the past week.
Mamelodi has, of late, been a hotbed of crime.
