Johannesburg - A large consignment of confiscated firearms and firearm parts has been destroyed by Gauteng police in Benoni.
Director Faizel Kader said 11 687 firearms - a variety of pistols, revolvers, home-made weapons and rifles - were destroyed, 10 478 of which had been confiscated in Gauteng.
He said the process was part of the police's continuous effort to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and to reduce firearm-related violence in the province and country.
Gauteng provincial commissioner Perumal Naidoo said police in Gauteng were dealing with the scourge of firearm violence vigorously and effectively.
"The successes are a clear indication of the police's commitment to getting rid of illegal firearms and ensuring a safe and secure environment in Gauteng," he said.
