Cape Town - Stun grenades and rubber bullets were fired at a group of 500 protesting security guards near Somerset West, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.
The guards, who were armed with sticks and knobkerries, gathered in a field between Chris Nissan park and the N2 on Monday evening, spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said.
They threw stones at passing cars and police. Five police officers sustained leg, arm and stomach injuries.
Police then embarked on crowd control measures using stun grenades and rubber bullets.
"The group dispersed about 22:00 and no reports were received that any security officials were injured during the incident."
A case of public violence was being investigated, Steyn said.
