Pretoria - Two policewomen and a five-year-old were hijacked in Pretoria over the weekend while the women were busy with an investigation.
The hijackers made off with their official vehicle. There were several police dockets in the car.
Inspector Piletji Sebola, a spokesperson, said the women were in Lotus Gardens when two men in a car surprised them.
The women, an inspector and a sergeant, work for the police's family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.
Sebola said the women wanted to remain anonymous because they feared reprisals.
The hijackers held the women at gunpoint and ordered them to hand over the car keys.
"The sergeant begged them to allow her to get the child out of the car and they allowed this," Sebola said.
The men fled in the car. Sebola said police do not believe that the hijackers were after the dockets.
