Johannesburg - Eight men were arrested after they tried to rob a Jumbo Cash and Carry wholesaler in Devland, Johannesburg on Friday morning, police said.
Spokesperson Constable Sefako Xaba said the men held a security guard at gunpoint at the gate and robbed him of his firearm.
"They then entered the premises. The security guards then alerted police who responded to the scene," Xaba said.
"One of the suspects, who was armed with an AK-47 rifle was waiting outside. When our officers arrived at the scene, the men fled in five vehicle,"
After a car chase, police managed to stop a BMW, a Peugeot and a VW Microbus on East Road towards Nasrec. An Audi A4 and a bakkie drove away.
"Eight men were arrested and four firearms were recovered."
Xaba said police were still searching for firearms they believed some of the suspects threw away before the arrests.
Police also recovered computers in the VW believed to have been stolen in a firm next to the wholesaler.
"We suspect that the men had robbed one of the firms in the area before proceeding to the wholesaler,"
Xaba said no money was taken from the wholesaler. More arrests were expected.
