Cops foil armed robbery in CT

Cape Town - Six people have been arrested after attempting to rob a fast food outlet on the beachfront in Table View, Cape Town police said on Tuesday.

Captain Frederick van Wyk said the men were arrested after a tipoff and subsequent undercover operation by the specialised crime unit, the Hawks, and police at 22:00 on Monday.

Van Wyk said four men had been seen getting out of a vehicle in front of the outlet and then entering the eatery.

"The members noticed the staff being pointed at with a firearm and money being demanded. A struggle ensued between staff and the robbers, but the robbers fled the premises without the money."

Outside the outlet police arrested two of the men while the other two fled the scene in a grey Toyota Corolla.

"Police gave chase and fired several shots at the vehicle when it came to a halt."

He said the two men were arrested in Milnerton and later, after being pointed out by the staff, another two were taken into custody.

During the arrests police also seized a 9mm Star pistol.

No one was injured during the incident and the men - between the ages of 21 and 30 - were expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
