Johannesburg - Four would-be cash-in-transit robbers were killed in Vuwani, near Levubu, in Limpopo on Monday, police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said it was believed the men were trying to rob a Coin security vehicle on Monday around 11:00.

"Patrolling police saw the Coin security vehicle standing next to the road with men attempting to open the back doors."

He said the men opened fire when they saw the police approaching.

"The four men were shot dead in an ensuing shoot-out with the police."

Mulaudzi said the policemen and security guards were not harmed.

The robbers were using a grey BMW with false registration numbers.

"Police seized four handguns, one police reflector jacket, a blue light, and a five-litre container filled with petrol," he said.
