Johannesburg - A hijacking on the N1 highway was aborted after a tracking device alerted police to the crime unfolding on Friday afternoon, Midrand police said.
Captain Jacob Mutadi said six men in four cars hijacked a delivery truck carrying computers near Edenvale at about 12:00.
The hijackers captured two men who were offloading the computers from the truck and put them in one of their cars.
The men were then driven to Kyalami, where they were dumped uninjured.
A tracking device on the truck then alerted the company that owned the truck it had been hijacked.
The company contacted the police who found the truck travelling near the Allandale offramp in Midrand.
"Police gave chase and several shots were fired. (The hijackers) dropped the truck."
The hijackers then apparently ran away on foot.
No arrests have been made, said Mutadi.
