Johannesburg - A North West policeman was granted R2 000 bail on Wednesday on a charge of raping a woman in a court toilet, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

The 49-year-old man, who worked as a court orderly at the High Court in Mmabatho, North West, accompanied the woman, 35, who was appearing in court, to the toilet, spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

"The warrant officer allegedly raped the victim in the toilet after she relieved herself."

The Ipid was informed about the matter when the man was arrested on September 3. It was not immediately known when the warrant officer would be back in court.

In a separate matter, two policemen appeared in court for allegedly raping an awaiting trial prisoner in the Free State last month.

The sergeants, aged 44 and 45, were given bail of R2 000 each by the Verkeerdevlei Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The two, based at the Botshabelo police station, were taking the 38-year-old woman from Bloemfontein to Kroonstaad prison, when they stopped between Verkeerdevlei and Winburg on August 29.

"The driver of the police vehicle allegedly asked the victim to have sex with him [and] she refused. The sergeant allegedly grabbed the victim and pushed her into the back of the police van, and the other policeman locked them inside and drove off."

Dlamini said the woman was then raped. The matter was reported to the Ipid and both men were arrested.

A total of seven rape cases involving policeman had been reported since July.
