2011-10-31 14:09
Johannesburg - Two police officers were expected to appear in court on Monday after a rape accused escaped from their custody, Gauteng police said.

"The man escaped through a toilet window at Dr George Mukhari Hospital on Friday," said Lungelo Dlamini.

A student constable and a warrant officer responsible for guarding the suspect were arrested shortly after the escape and were expected to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court.

Dlamini said the man was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly raping and stabbing a student from the University of Pretoria.

While in custody at Pretoria North police station, the prisoner complained that he felt ill. He was taken to the hospital from which he escaped.

Beeld newspaper reported on Monday that the rape victim suffered at least 22 stab wounds, including cuts to her face, neck and legs.
