Cops hunt 4th suspect in Gumtree murder

2012-09-03 10:10

Cape Town - Three men will appear in court in connection with a man who was killed after going to meet apparent buyers of his BMW, it was reported on Monday.

The Cape Times reported that the men were accused of hijacking, kidnapping and killing Olwyn Cowley, 21, whom they contacted through classifieds website Gumtree.

Police are also looking for a fourth suspect, the report states.

Cowley's body was found at Monwabisi beach on Friday with two bullet wounds to the head. His silver BMW 325 TI was later found in Mitchells Plain.

Cowley's aunt Anita Hanekom told the newspaper her nephew first met with a possible buyer on Tuesday. They agreed to meet again when the man had money.

He then met the buyers around 17:30 on Thursday at a petrol station in Century City. His family tried phoning his cellphone after that but the calls were rejected.

The men will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court later on Monday.

Get rid of the witnesses and there is less chance of being prosecuted. That and the sentences are practically the same anyway.

that's the SA way, gimme what you got and I'll still take your life. I'd happily give up some electricity for us to get old sparky back in action and execute a few of these f'ers.

Shocking and sad. Criminal scum using Gumtree as their tool to murder and steel? Unbelievable and unacceptable. I have never trusted anything advertised on Gumtree, nor will I ever use them to sell anything of mine. I thought theft and fraud via this website was bad enough, but this?

This is so sad, for such a young life to be taken by thugs, My heart goes out to his family. People learn from this when you sell something on Gumtree, insist that the buyer come to your residence, don't go to meet them it may be the last time you ever sell something on Gumtree again

You can't just let people come to your residence, be sure that you are with somebody when any meeting takes place, at home or away. Have the goods you are selling either in your garage or easily accessible, so that there is no unnecessary movement around your house or apartment. Only allow the buyer in, there is no need for two or three to come in as well. Have the buyers cell number, check that it is the buyer by calling that cellphone number when they arrive. have their email address ask for a business card, ID, write out a receipt, get their address when selling a car, meet at a police station don't be to eager just to sell, always ensure you have a friend or associate with you. be cautious always. Meet whenever possible away from your residence, get the make and registration of the car they arrive with. Be at the meeting spot before they arrive. When you meet in a public place, phone the contact number, check who is answering. There is a lot you can do to ensure that as much precautions are taken as possible, and there can never be to much care taken.

I usually meet people from gumtree at the police station .

Carolyn don't ever think of inviting buyers into your home . These people attach you and your family tie you up and then raid your house. True story happened to a few friends already.

Why did they need to kill him? Just take the car!

It is time to fight fire with fire; if thieves want to kill then we want to kill thieves. In this country thieves have more rights then tax payers who keep to the law; so lets stop wasting time, buy a gun; take aim and blow the stupid thieve away...! "A Wena make my DAY!"

pre-meditated, planned and calculated - why would the criminals bring a gun to a car sale? i hope they will find hell in jail.

There seems to be this perception that they can get away with it. Possibly so drugged out it did not seem to be real at the time?

Olwyn was a young boy who had a great future ahead of him and now all that is left is the sadness in our hearts and a lot of anger. All of us who was fortunate to know Olwyn would love to see these guys suffer a grusame death - does two wrongs make a right - YES in this case they should be shot cause why must my tax money feed the scum that killed Olwyn Cowley.

We need to create a society that tramples on crime and rewards those who build it up. People need there dignity not soccer stadiums.
