Cops hunt Joburg BMW gang

2011-07-07 09:25

Johannesburg - Police are investigating reports of a silver 3-series BMW allegedly implicated in hijackings and armed robberies in Johannesburg suburbs, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Neville Malila said: "We have received enquires and are looking into it."

The Star reported that the car, with tinted windows and the registration plate TKN870GP, was linked to a four-month crime spree by three or four men in the city's suburbs.

The modus operandi of the gang involved following their targets home from shopping centres.

Incidents involving the car were reported in Northcliff, Mulbarton, Glenvista, Glenanda, Little Falls, Rosebank and Lenasia.

I really wish you got your fact right and the No is not duplicated .Publishing someone's registration number.

      Made_In_SA - 2011-07-07 09:43

Dr? your comment makes perfect sense, I don't know why I didn't think of that... Ps: your MENSA application form is ready and waiting!

      1gascan - 2011-07-07 10:15

Duplicated? If I had the money and owned such a fancy car, I wouldn't consider putting a so-called "criminal" number plate on my car by duplicating the number plate. Any idiot out there who decides to use this number plate now is looking for trouble! MENSA application revoked temporarily :) If, however, you meant to say that the incorrect number was posted in the media and that someone honest suffers because of it, and also the fact that the criminals now become aware that the cops are on the lookout for them and they change their plates, then I would agree 100% with you... :)

      Enigma - 2011-07-07 10:24

@1gascan- I don't think you get Dr. He means that thieves can copy the same registration no of a similar vehicle to confuse the cops or their targets. Once they're finish with their daily crimes, they then put back the original plates back. Surely you're not from EKASI (it is called UKUPHEMA in kasi lingo)

      DrLedwaba - 2011-07-07 10:58

@1gascan I just can't figure out the reason why police are failing to get that BMW for over 4 month, unless it has a 2nd or Bogus No plate. Again remember information can not be unlearned, now everbody knows that BMW with TKN870GP is dangerous, what if a BMW with that NO drives you bad on the road, the point is what if wrong people die as a result of this

      1gascan - 2011-07-07 11:16

@Dr. 100%, I fully agree with you. No one's life is worth the acts of these criminals. And yes, it is completely pathetic that after 4 months these guys are still on the road in the SAME vehicle.

      HJS - 2011-07-07 13:22

That vehicle's registration has been captured on CCTV images more than once as it made a get-away from various crime scenes. BUT IT SURE CAN BE FALSE, or duplicated. About time that the Police get involved and hunt this gang down. They are not going to surrender without a BIG fight.

      Barry - 2011-07-13 17:19

      @ Made_In_SA You mean Densa ?

      Wedfew - 2011-07-14 06:45

Yeah like they going to use their own Number plate... But I'm sure the original car don't have tinted windows LET ALONE BE A SILVER BMW???

  • theprodigy - 2011-07-07 09:33

Bill it ironic that the capitalists ran to the socialists to bail them out of their Global Financial Crisis.

  • Chris - 2011-07-07 09:58

Is so simple why don't they go to licence department ask the details of the car owner, if he/she didn't report the car stolen is automatically part of them, I see no reason why people are aching themselves about simple thing. If the car belongs to one of the criminals addresses are there (licence deparment), @ theprodigy, this has nothing to do with any poloical party, u're out of line champ!

      BigD - 2011-07-07 10:03

it is more than likely false plates

      mambat - 2011-07-07 10:59

@ Dear Chris It is not as simple as you make it out to be. First no one would use their own car to commit a crime, so in all probabilities they are using a stolen vehicle and 2. No criminal no matter how moronic would use their orginal numbers to go and commit a crime with. So the logic here is that it is a stolen vehicle with cloned (copied) numbers belong to an innocent person who does not even know. If you cannot comprehend the crime modus of criminals then refer to Dr 's commments.

      PunkBuster - 2011-07-07 12:10

      Ofcause it is BigD.

  • The-Boffin - 2011-07-07 10:00

They shall be hunted by the cops. They shall be caught by the cops, then chapter closed. These thugs'evil deeds are as ugly as sin but our criminal law is criminal friendly unto them. So sickening Not even worth news.

      Lynne - 2011-07-07 11:38

um, actually the new laws are not exactly criminal friendly. remember the police have basically been militarised.

      tryanything - 2011-07-07 17:55

  • Gore - 2011-07-07 10:17

If they can not do it on big thing like a vehicle where all our vast personal details are on government database, what are the chances of RICA? Collecting our information and be told that it makes crime fighting easier, is a myth in practice!!

  • Heronakamura - 2011-07-07 10:20

The people that robbed Mzwandile Petros' house were arrested on the same day - But the rest of us must terrorized for months before action is taken?

  • Egg-Zachary - 2011-07-07 10:43

These guys will only be caught if they rob an ANC official or police commisioners house!

  • theratlady - 2011-07-07 10:48

The beauty of it is that, according to another more indepth article on the case, some of the crimes were caught n cctv cameras and the perps were not wearing anything to protect their indentity. Yet they are still at large and the police still cannot identify them.

  • Jonathan - 2011-07-07 11:28

The plate is correct, don't you lot worry - verified by independent policing forum in my area.

      Barry - 2011-07-13 17:23

@ Jonathan But who does it belong to ?

  • Jonathan - 2011-07-07 11:29

Oh, and the Beemer is stolen ;-)

  • Mr Gus - 2011-07-07 11:45

Surely with this story on the front pages of the daily rags them criminals will have dumped the BMW or are they really stupid - lets hope so!

  • Enigma - 2011-07-07 12:20

Dear mates let me educate you on the process of plate no cloning. 1> Go check out the fastest car which won't look very suspicious. 2> The car must be the latest model so that it will seem legit 3> Once found it follow it for couple of days to study it's route. 4> Today is THE day. You either steal it or hijack it. In a blink of an eye the car is gone. 5> Don't take it to the township bcoz that's the 1st plcae the cops are gonna go look @. Hide it in the suburbs so that you can access it easily. 6> Go to the car rental place and look for the exact same model and color of the car you stole or hijacked and copy down it's plate no's. 7> Most of the spares do make plate no's and costs round about R120-R180. 8> Once the plates are changed, you are now Ready to go on your crime spree. When you are finish with your criminal activities for the day, put back the original plates and go to party. And that my fellow News 24 readers is the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth!!! However @ the party one of the criminals gets drunk and starts talking about the activities without realising that he is leaking the information.

      shatzi - 2011-07-07 19:35

so where are you parking the beemer

      Harry1 - 2011-07-08 08:14

Me thinks these gangsters are cops themselves.

  • Jezabbela - 2011-07-07 13:33

guys please read the full story on IOL. I don't see why News24 reported this with no facts. IOL has the full story including the issue of the numbers which really is duplicated.

  • Craig - 2011-07-07 15:24

They will never be found unless it is by accident. Just like the taxi driver in Cape Town that had 89 oustanding warrents of arrest. I have R150 late fine and the sherrif is at my door. 89 oustanding warrents and he gets caught by accident at a road block. He owes close to R100 000 in fines. He will get a slap on the wrists and set free. Let one of US do it and we will sit ... of have to sell our house to pay it. The cops should all go to a village and have a fight to decide who is the village idiot.... They are a joke.....

      Azizi - 2011-07-07 20:25

Craig who is 'one of US' I take it not one of 'These People'.

  • shatzi - 2011-07-07 19:32

probably some of our fine saps members in a vehicle that they recovered, thats why there is no progress on the case

  • Paulus - 2011-07-07 22:01

why dont they use the fancy cameras on the new toll gates to look for this car? everyone knows you cant drive anywhere now without passing through one of these "scanners"

      elbie - 2011-07-08 05:50

Paulus hehe. Is it possible these gates don't work ?!

  • sasa - 2011-07-08 02:20

'Police are investigating reports' - it hardly sounds like they are hunting a BMW gang! ? LOL.. What a useless news story

  • Lindzi - 2011-07-13 15:16

One winter night i had a group of seven police men carrying big machine guns banging my door. They circled my house and demanded that i open. At first i thought of resisting because they were in plain clothes but i then thought to myself, if its thugs, so be it. They were so excited they had caught the Rolex gang as they are known. My car was parked outside. The plates were as per the footage they had. They cross questioned me through the night, all at the same time, confusing me. I was rescued by my demeanor, they wanted to lock me up. My plate had been duplicated. When i saw the footage in the morning the cars were totally different. It was a BMW, white with a sunroof but it didnt have a sports parkage like mine. FACT: Thugs wont use traceable plates. I had to change my plate same day lest i was seen in the freeway and short at by the trigger happy police.

  • Wedfew - 2011-07-14 06:46

Why not run the details of the number plate????

  • Antonio Ashley Morientes - 2011-07-14 09:37

How do we combat crime in this country? I have a couple of suggestions: - 1. Shifting Focus There's a mind set in most South Africans that crime is being conducted by foreigners that come into the country as a result attention is given much to our brothers and sisters from another mother leaving our own beloved brothers and sisters killing, hijacking and breaking into our homes. Oh by the way if a local guy (South African) is involved in criminal activities, he's given a title in the location - He's called a "SPINNER" commanding so much respect amongst his peers and those looking up to him because of the flashy clothes and the cars he's driving. Everybody knows what he does for a living but no one would turn him in. See one foreign guy in the neighbourhood, everybody becomes suspicius which is good because poeple would be paying attention to his activities which more often than not turns out to be genuine, the brother is just trying to survive by selling socks, T-Shirts and so on and so forth. 2. Lets treat crime as in crime irespective of who's committing it. We've got corrupt government officials who've been put on paid leave pending on the outcome of investigations of the criminal activities they have been alledgedly accused of having done. In some cases evidence is beyond reasonable doubts but because they are our beloved brothers - as the saying goes you can't keep a comrade down, they are at large.
