Durban - Police intensified a search operation on Tuesday to find a six-month-old baby who was kidnapped during a double murder.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said the baby (gender unknown) was taken on Sunday night from a home in Mariannhill.
The details of the crime were only released by police on Tuesday.
The baby's mother Mashamelani Mchunu, 35, and sister Zanele Mchunu, 19, were shot dead and their bodies were found by neighbours on Monday.
Veldhuizen said neighbours had gone to the home to check up on the family because they had heard gunshots coming from the home the night before.
The shooting is believed to have taken place at around 22:00 on Sunday.
"The bodies were found lying next to each other on a double bed. The mother was shot in the chest and the daughter was shot in the head,"
said Veldhuizen.
"Only the baby was taken, nothing else," she said.
Police suspect the incident may be linked to domestic violence.
No arrests have been made yet but police are investigating a double murder and kidnapping case.
