Johannesburg - Police in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday called on members of the public to assist in their search for a man who shot dead three people in New Brighton.

The shooting left four others critically wounded.

A man apparently entered a tavern in Nibe Street at about 19:30 on Monday and started shooting randomly.

"At this moment the suspect and the motive for the attack are unknown," provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta said in a statement.

"We strongly condemn the violent and unlawful behaviour and request the community to work together with the police in getting those responsible for these heinous criminal attacks [arrested]."

A multi-disciplinary police task team had been established to investigate the shooting.
