Durban - Police in KwaZulu-Natal are hunting for the attackers suspected of raping an 86-year old Austrian nun in Ixopo before robbing her and strangling her to death.

Major Thulani Zwane said on Tuesday that the nun was found dead in her room at the Sacred Heart Missionary over the weekend.

Getrud Tiefebacher's body was discovered by her fellow nuns.

"It is alleged that the victim was at her residence when she was approached by a suspect who allegedly tied her hands with a typewriter cord. She was also covered with a towel over her face, causing the victim to suffocate.”

Zwane said there were no signs of forced entry and it was unclear as to how many attackers there were.

"We are still waiting for the forensic tests to confirm if she was raped," he said.

An undisclosed amount of foreign currency, believed to be euros, was taken from the nun.

Zwane appealed to the community to come forward with any information they had.
