Cape Town - Three Cape Town men have been arrested after being found with R500 000 worth of perlemoen (abalone), police said on Monday.
Captain Malcolm Pojie said police noticed a "suspicious" Daihatsu Sirion when it passed a roadblock on the N2 highway between Swellendam and George.
"It was a routine roadblock to monitor the transportation of ostrich and the spreading of bird flu."
Pojie said police followed the car and pulled it off the road near George.
Police confiscated 19 bags of perlemoen with a value on the street of about R500 000, a firearm, a "tik pipe" as well as the car.
Three suspects, aged, 23, 46 and 48, were arrested and would appear in George magistrate's court on Wednesday.
They would be charged with dealing in perlemoen, possession of an unlicensed fire arm, pointing of a firearm and possession of tik (the drug methcathinone).
