Johannesburg - A suspected hijacker was arrested after a car chase with police through southern Johannesburg on Friday.
Spokesperson Captain Mbhazima Shiburi said Mondeor police got information at 11:00 that a white Mazda bakkie had just been hijacked. They searched the area and spotted the vehicle.
"They chased the bakkie - which had three occupants - from Mondeor to Soweto where it drove into the Orlando (Department of) Home Affairs offices, bumping into three cars which were parked in front of the offices," said Shiburi.
The hijackers jumped out of the bakkie and started shooting at the police.
"The police fired back, and two bystanders were injured and later taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital," said Shiburi.
Two of the men managed to escape.
An unlicensed 9mm pistol was found in possession of the man who was arrested.
He would appear in the Booysens magistrate's court on Monday, said Shiburi.
