Cops in shoot-out with suitcase-wielding men

2012-09-07 12:51

Cape Town - Four men were arrested on Friday following a dramatic shoot-out on a busy main road just outside the Cape Town CBD.

Several men apparently carrying suitcases entered a fast food outlet in Victoria Road, Woodstock, brandished weapons and tried to rob the business, staff told Eyewitness News.

One of the staff members managed to trigger the alarm.

Luckily, police officers were also on a routine patrol in the area. They approached one of the suspects who began firing shots at the officers.

Police returned fire and managed to wound one of the robbers.

EWN also reported that the robbery resulted in an accident between a bus and taxi but an eyewitness told News24 there was none.

However, the police nabbed them and arrested all four men. A getaway vehicle was also recovered.

The men, all in their early thirties, will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Just about every story you read on robbery, its told that there was a shoot out. Robbers are getting rather cocky as they know even if caught, they will serve minimum sentences. I feel sorry for the cops in a certain way, they will be "punsihed" (for want of a better word) whether they open fire in self defence or not. all of this just because our government states that the criminal has rights too. BS!!!

      arthur.hugh - 2012-09-07 13:22

Pity those four didn't get one each right between the eyes.

      djmarcosa - 2012-09-07 13:24

trust the government now to open up a case against the police for doing their job and making some or other excuse to run the police down.. the police get into trouble for not doing their job and when they do their job they still get into trouble.. funny how that is..

  • warren.rodel - 2012-09-07 13:20

Captured? They opened fire... perfect opportunity to finish them off. Like they should've done to the whole bunch of Lonmin miners.

These police did an amazing job. They caught all 4 of these okes. Great job to those SAPs involved. You are a bunch of very brave men. Putting your lives on the line for a minimum wage salary. I would join the SAPS if they paid 10k a month minimum!
