Johannesburg - Five motorists were to spend Sunday night in police custody after being caught doing more than 180km/h on the N1 freeway outside Johannesburg, said Wayne Minnaar of Metro police.
The motorists were travelling in both directions of the N1 just south of the N12 turnoff to Potchefstroom.
They were denied bail and were to spend the night in Mondeor police station cells before appearing in court on Monday.
Minnaar said the metro police action stemmed from "the increase in the number of accidents in which people have died in the past few weekends".
'Might forfeit their cars'
Metro police decided to arrest five motorists who had been caught travelling at more than 60km/h above the speed limit.
Minnaar said the motorists faced the possibility of having their cars forfeited to the State, after a recent Supreme Court of Appeal ruling in this regard.
The five cars were a silver Toyota RunX with no number plates caught at 08:23 doing 208km/h, followed by a white BMW at 09:00 doing 206km/h.
These were followed by a silver BMW, at 10:06, doing 186km/h, and a silver Mercedes-Benz caught at 12:49, doing 187km/h.
A black BMW was clocked at 13:01, doing 197km/h.
