Cops kill axe-wielding man

2012-01-14 08:00

Johannesburg - A man was shot dead by police when he allegedly tried to attack an officer with an axe in Temba, north of Pretoria on Friday, Gauteng police said.

Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said the 50-year-old man was shot in the back and died at the scene.

He said police received information that the man was growing dagga in his yard.

When he saw policemen at his house, he apparently went inside and returned with an axe.

He tried to run away, but was caught by an officer whom he tried to hit with the axe.

Mangena said another policeman then shot and killed the man.

Police found dagga on the man's property, but could not say how much.

The officer's firearm was confiscated and a case of murder was being investigated.

2012 appears to be year of the psycho. Well done officers! Time to rid our society of these "crazies" who endanger the lives of our citizens.

      Squeegee - 2012-01-14 08:16

Did he have an axe to grind with the police?

      mario.dippenaar - 2012-01-14 08:41

Why would the police kill someone for carrying body spray? Maybe it was just an axeident.

      Yar - 2012-01-14 09:00

@Derpy Even attacking a policeman with a roll-on deodorant could get you arrested. LOL

  • AGvanderWesthuizen - 2012-01-14 08:14

Well done SAPS. Axes are for chopping wood.

      Yar - 2012-01-14 09:02

Rule number 1. Never take a knife, axe or a sharp-pointed stick to a gunfight.

  • Mr Kcopah - 2012-01-14 08:15

shot in the back..these police need proper training..you dont kill a man for his herbs..dude..maybe a rapist, the president, malema another cop..ya thats fine.

      Squeegee - 2012-01-14 08:17

Mr K, you don't defend your weed with an axe.

Last Outpost Of The British Empire - 2012-01-14 08:33

Perhaps these two fine officers were getting rid of the opposition. Sounds like a fishy story. Many cops 'issue' weapons to the deceased after he's been shot to give their story some credibility.

      Mr Kcopah - 2012-01-14 10:56

ok..if herbs are really wrong then (which the're not) why not shoot the arm holding the axe..especially because the shooter was another cop who had time to aim.

      Steenbra - 2012-01-14 11:32

So clever Mr Kcopah, what would you do if you partner is being attacked with an axe, call your boss and ask him what to do? What you need is not proper training but a brain transplant you moron

  • AdriaanAdams - 2012-01-14 08:20

Police can't say how much dagga was found, mmhh makes me think why...

  • Bob - 2012-01-14 08:39

Man attacks armed officers with an axe...shot in the back....unknown quantity of weed…..officers firearm confiscated…..murder charge being investigated..! This seems to smack of something being very fishy on the officers side of the real truth of events!

  • Buti - 2012-01-14 08:40

Their mission was to kill not to arrest him.

  • Roberto - 2012-01-14 08:41

He tried to run away, but was caught by an officer whom he tried to hit with the axe. Another policeman then shot and killed the man. WTF DUDE?. Sounds not so lekker......

      John - 2012-01-14 09:36

The cops are so unfit and overweight that they couldn't run after him. So if you can't keep up... shoot!! Then find reasons why you had to shoot (not because he was getting away... but eish! I suddenly found the axe... and I will find the dagga too... give me time!

  • barry.mcbride - 2012-01-14 09:24

Police found dagga on the man's property, but conveniently couldn't say how much.

  • Jacques - 2012-01-14 09:28

Maybe the oke was just sitting there, having a blaze, next thing he knew he saw the cops and panicked. Still, if someone growing weed in his yard atacks me with an axe I'll shoot him without thinking twice. Not as if talking or threatening a homicidal pothead will help much.

  • ludlowdj - 2012-01-14 09:55

charge the "PIG" with murder, it is not acceptable to assume that they could not wrestle a 50 year old man to the ground. In term of our law using a firearm in a knife (or in this case axe fight) is not justifiable, especially where the man gets shot in the back, I would like the police officers trying to justify that in court, neither is shooting to kill. Two sets of rules as usual with a police force which is at least 50% corrupt getting the upper hand.

  • Elias - 2012-01-14 10:00

there is something wrong he was shot at the back. It shows that this man not attacking he was running away . These policeme are killers. It is no acceptable for the state to kill people.

  • Mel - 2012-01-14 10:22

Police Force in NZ would have to be the best in the world..Least corrupt. SA cops have an awful life at work and home, but there is always exceptions.

  • Terence Craig Berry - 2012-01-14 11:18

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time!!!

  • lorretdl - 2012-01-14 11:20

Oh get real. When the police do nothing you bitch, when the do something you bitch. If someone wants to hit my friend with a axe I'll shoot him in the back. It is standard procedure to take the murder weapon for tests.

  • Jackky - 2012-01-14 11:25

good shot officer...it should have been so stupid of you to allow the 50yrs old fool kill another patriotic citizen.,,,,, never allow tugs kill you kill the tugs.
