Cops looking for Benoni fraudster

2010-10-02 19:00
Johannesburg - Free State police are looking for a Benoni man who defrauded people by selling them fake insurance policies, a spokesperson said on Saturday.

Sergeant Puleng Motsoeneng said the man sold policies to customers while working as an insurance broker in Benoni, but the "money was deposited into his personal bank account".

Motsoeneng said in 2009 the man allegedly phoned a Free State woman and convinced her to take out a funeral policy.

When her relative died later in the year she phoned his insurance company to claim, but was told he had left the company.

Her policy was invalid and it was found that her monthly premiums had been paid into a personal account, Motsoeneng said.

She said his company confirmed this was not the first case reported about the suspect's fraudulent policies in the last year.

Police urged others who have been affected to report to the police.
