Welkom - Bystanders at an accident scene outside Welkom on Friday night, where a stray cow was struck by two cars, looked on in shock as two policemen from the flying squad stopped at the accident scene, cut off the dead cow's head, loaded it into their police vehicle and drove off.
Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson, confirmed that a charge of theft has been laid against the warrant officer and reservist constable, and an internal investigation has been ordered by their commanding officer, Colonel Nkesi Tsiu.
No-one was injured in the accident, but the two vehicles were badly damaged.
The cow walked onto the road in the darkness in front of the car on the Alma Road outside Welkom, across from the old Welkom Mine No 1 shaft.
The impact flung the cow over the car and it landed on the road in front of another car, which ran over the cow.
When the police and ambulance services arrived at the scene, the cow was dead.
According to bystanders, the two flying squad police officials only arrived at the scene later.
They walked straight to the carcass, cut the head off completely, loaded it into the police vehicle and drove off.
The flying squad car was clearly marked with an R2 logo.
A month ago, Volksblad reported that three flying squad police officials from Welkom who were called out to the scene of a house robbery, were apparently so drunk that one of them could not sit up straight and almost fell asleep on the complainant's couch.
Police spokesperson Puleng Motsoeneng denied that the three officials had been drunk.
