Cops nab 1 033 in Jhb swoop

Johannesburg - Police have arrested 1 033 people in intensified policing operations since Friday, said sergeant Sanku Tsunke on Tuesday.
The arrests were made at roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints and cordon-and-search operations set up at the weekend.
During the operations 3 992 vehicles and 10 220 people were searched.
Tsunke said 434 people were arrested for serious crimes which included assault, break-ins, possession of drugs and stolen goods, murder, rape, armed robbery and domestic violence.
"About 600 people were arrested for committing minor offences such as drinking in public places and gambling."
Tsunke said those arrested for minor offences paid an admission-of-guilt fine and were released.
Meanwhile, people arrested for serious crimes were being kept in police holding cells and would appear in court soon.
