Pietermaritzburg - A man accused of the abduction and rape of a six-year-old Midlands girl was arrested on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.
The girl was with her 10-year-old brother at their grandmother's home in Copesville on Monday when a man walked into their house, blew out the candle, bundled her in a blanket and carried her off.
Inspector Joey Jeevan said when the children's grandmother returned a short while later, she alerted police and an extensive search was launched with help from the community.
The girl was found in a field at 23:30 the same evening.
She was taken to hospital for a medical examination while police continued their search for her attacker.
On Wednesday afternoon specialised units in the Pietermaritzburg police made a breakthrough and arrested a 35-year-old man who is due to appear in court soon, Jeevan said.
