Johannesburg - A Newcastle woman died of a gunshot wound to her head, while her husband was critically wounded at their home on Thursday, emergency workers said.
The circumstances of the shooting were not known at this stage said police spokesperson Captain Shooz Magudulela.
A firearm found at the scene and the hands of the couple - both in their late 20s - would be tested to determine who fired the shots, he said.
The woman died on the scene, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha. Her husband, who was also shot in the head, was resuscitated and taken to the Newcastle Private Hospital in a critical condition.
Magudulela said the man had earlier called his brother, asking to be picked up from the couple's home.
However, the brother called the police when he arrived to find the doors locked and no sound of movement inside. Police had to break down a door to get inside.
