Johannesburg - Police are investigating a total of 50 suspects with alleged connections to a child porn syndicate, it was reported on Thursday.

Six people, including a former headmaster at a top Mpumalanga school, a teacher, a lawyer and a dermatologist, have been arrested for alleged involvement in the syndicate.

The syndicate is thought to have links to child porn rings in other countries such as Canada, the UK, US, Australia and European nations.

Police have so far issued 30 search warrants and are busy applying for 20 new ones, Eyewitness News reported.

They are also investigating whether South African children were among those abused.

Police spokesperson Solomon Makgale said the accused were arrested in Lichtenburg, Bloemfontein, White River, Douglasdale, Florida, and Potchefstroom.

At the weekend, police raided several homes in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Free State.

Among the items seized were 672 DVDs, 22 memory sticks, eight laptops, two computer tablets, 39 external hard drives, and 25 books containing child porn.

Makgale was quoted by EWN as saying that police hoped to determine whether the evidence could link the suspects with one another.

“They did electronic transactions so there’s no way they can reverse that. It’s there. Our job is to find the evidence.”
