Cops shoot man in road rage incident

2011-08-20 16:11

Johannesburg - A Fordsburg man was shot by metro police in an apparent road rage incident, Johannesburg metro police said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the man, who was driving a white Golf, had followed a red Golf that cut him off in peak hour traffic on Friday on Barry Hertzog Avenue.

He followed the vehicle and when he caught up to it, drew his gun and smashed the car windows.

The man, 29, then pointed the gun at the two occupants of the other Golf who turned out to be metro policemen in plain clothes, driving an unmarked car.

"After he broke the window with his firearm and then pointed the firearm at the officers, the suspect was shot on his right leg," Minnaar said.

He said the man would be charged with attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

"We will also conduct a criminal investigation as well as a departmental investigation," said Minnaar.

The same cops that take bribes and naked photos of models? Yes I'd say a departmental investigation is a good idea.

      Kevin - 2011-08-21 07:51

Are we seriously expected to believe this. He just happened to pick on plin clothes cops.he just happened to point a gun. They luckily had time to pull there gun and shoot him .Sure

Blue Light Brigade Strikes Again! Friday, 09 of December, cars on the highway from Durban gave way to a political convoy with blue lights. Remembering 1 man killed by the Blue Light Brigade in Durban, and another in Jo'burg, I protested those murders and raised my finger as they drove past. They proceeded to block me and lunge their cars at me, as I swerved, slowed and pulled away. I held strong and steadfast in my protest! My family, however, were badly shaken. It is time that the ANC realizes that they are not above criticism and rejection, and also NOT ABOVE THE LAW! I expected them to zap me back, or even lay misdemeanor charges against me. But the public harassment and bullying shows that these mentals are in a mindset of their own. They need to be transferred to Antarctica!

  • john - 2011-08-20 16:37

How can the bloke be shot ON his right leg? You are shot IN the leg, not on it. I'm just waiting for the internet's first "grammar rage" incident, heh.

      frangelico - 2011-08-20 20:45

No siree no problem with your grammer eish man anything goes in the rainbow nation. Now look here don't you know that*****

Grammar Nazis unite. I assume news24 uses professional writers. Why cannot they write?

      Noc - 2011-08-21 07:14

@zaatheist: You are only allowed to call yourself a grammar nazi when you have figured out how to identify and know the different uses of quotation marks. You sir, just failed that test, and should have your grammar nazi badge revoked as you're not qualified to wear it.

well bang goes his fire arm liscence for one thing , possibly some time in a holiday camp to contemplate anger management compliments of uncle jacob zuma . i mean really what was this guy thinking and what spurred this guy to do something so ill considered

      Jungle justice.

      Kevin - 2011-08-21 11:24

So you believe the cops story

      OZNOB - 2011-08-21 19:26

  • vegetarian - 2011-08-20 17:08

This story is a definite lie. It is the metro cops who road raged the guy and then shot him. In fact he did not even drew his gun, otherwize he would have shot them. The metro cops cut in front of this man; he then cut in front of them; they stopped and he asked them what they were doing; insults were exchanged; when the cops saw that their victim was telling them all things they did not want to hear, they shot him. To cover their crime they then broke the glass of their own vehicle. Otherwise the other version is ridiculous. Now see why the public assault these beasts.

Very mature response, how about confirming that you were a witness to the event and this particular post was not just sucked out of your thumb! Until then......!! By the way, I did give your next post a 'thumbs up' ps. piggy is delicious, sliced thick and pan-fried with a sticky honey glaze, yum-yum

  • vegetarian - 2011-08-20 17:18

The traffic cops have proved to be a nuisance on the roads. I think speed cameras are a better alternative to these bloated preditors. If you are stupid enough to exceed the speed limit, the camera will catch you and will not ask for a bribe. I get so irritated when these jerks stop me, look at me and say "you can go", unnecessarily delaying my journey. They are particularly irksome when you are in a hurry as they are always looking for an opportunity to negotiate a bribe with their victims.

      PinkAndProud - 2011-08-20 18:43

Aaaargh Veggie, the cops take one look at you, puke and then wave you on. The smell of vrot cabbage probably also nauseates them.

      Axiom - 2011-08-20 21:15

  • braamc - 2011-08-20 17:39

Smell a rat here. Mmm Metro Cops. A bribe gone wrong perhaps?

  • ElKapino - 2011-08-20 18:36

"He followed the vehicle and when he caught up to it, drew his gun and smashed the car windows." i bet the gun had no bullets, did he has to be close to smash the car windows?if that was his intentions or car is bullet proofed if he wanted to shoot em , Dumb as with a gun.. deserves to be shot

  • Malcop - 2011-08-20 19:04

Now if someone pulled out a gun in a fit of rage on a golf course, and shot someone on another golf cart, would this be called golf course rage. In my opinion, rage is rage, no matter where it occurs. The term,"road rage", is the most daft term ever invented.

      tryanything - 2011-08-20 19:26

At least it wasnt Shaik on the Golf course

      Axiom - 2011-08-20 21:13

What a silly thing to say you Knob. Why not just refer to a "cart", why say "golf cart". A cart is a cart?

  • thabo.tebele - 2011-08-20 19:05

Is it just me or what but most golf drivers in Johannesburg are very negligent drivers. They either cut in front of you or they will just drag race you at the traffic lighs just to stop at the next one.Them and taxi drivers are the same, they drive as if they are better drivers than anybody else.Thats my general observation.

      PinkAndProud - 2011-08-20 19:12

I think you're quite correct. It's a certain type that is attracted to golfs and especially if the car is black and with tinted windows and a powerful sound system. Says it all hey?

      tryanything - 2011-08-20 19:28

Trouble is Jhb Metro has a brilliant achievement record......I dont even stick up for them anymore....

      Mark - 2011-08-20 20:25

they just love to drag race over a short distance and in busy traffic cos most of the golfs cant get over 160kmh.

      Kleinjan - 2011-08-21 11:26

It's because everyone thinks a golf is the fastest car on the planet.

with owning a fire arm comes the responsebility of knowing when to use it,this guy obviously thought it was to be used to intimidate people with, the idiot will now pay the price

  • martin - 2011-08-20 20:00

Please Metro Cops and SAPS are not ALL bad guys, some really do their job and good also, I work with these guys everyday even if I am not a member of any of the metioned. If this guy pointed a fire arm at anyone the LAW states what he could be shot dead not just wounded, if he pointed it at me I would of shot to kill. Take one day in the "life of a Metro cop's job" and see how people treat you - swear at you etc.. how long would you tolerate it before you had enough? People also see the good in other, not always the bad - YES I do agree there are a lot of bad ones outside, but not all of them are bad.

      Sizwe - 2011-08-20 20:31

@Martin if you do not have the mettle for the job then do not take it! The "people do not appreciate us" therefore we get frustrated (and abuse our authority), is not a good enough reason to not do your job as required of you. Imagine you went to the bank at month-end and the tellers tell you, they wont help you because the public does not appreciate them so come back another time. Would you find this acceptable!?

      the kid! - 2011-08-20 21:07

Look at how metro stands around while strikers thrash the city> they are F******ing useless!!! They like to target soft easy prey> When there are a couple of strikers with sticks they back off and even pick up after them> How can they decide when to enforce the law? If anyone else goes and destroy municipal property right in front of them they will be arrested> That is discrimination> If they want respect they should earn it.

  • Mark - 2011-08-20 20:22

golf drivers think they own the road.

  • Sizwe - 2011-08-20 20:26

This story seems a bit far-fetched, I honestly do not see a licenced firearm owner brandishing a weapon on a public road knowing fully well what the legal implications are. On the other hand, the police abusing their authority and trying to pull over a vehicle that cut them off in traffic is not so far-fetched. They probably pointed a gun at him to signal him to stop in the middle of traffic (remember VIP and KZN?), and when he refused they fired and hit him in the leg (closest to the drivers side door!), it was probably sheer luck for them that he had a pistol/revolver in the car.

      Bill - 2011-08-20 21:22

      My same sentiments

  • Sylkie - 2011-08-20 22:06

Should find out if there were webcams in the area, may tell the real story.

  • Rita - 2011-08-20 22:14

Sounds like horse apples. If a man drew a gun on the gung ho criminal cops they would have shot him in the head not the leg.

  • Carlos Duarte - 2011-08-20 22:25

Forget the cops that take bribes. And commemorate with me that they shot one of these criminals that go around roads threatening people and doing mayhem. There's too many ot these street criminals around. This one bit the dust. Well done, cops! Strike one for sanity!

  • Bewildered - 2011-08-20 22:34

This is a strange story indeed, even disregarding the poor grammar. "He followed the vehicle and when he caught up to it, drew his gun and smashed the car windows." Does this mean the car was stationary when he caught up? Was he outside his own vehicle? Had to have been else he couldn't have been shot in the leg? Crazy story .....

  • mvanlier1 - 2011-08-21 07:42

If goverment were to spend less money on bling and inflated salaries and more on health care and police services maybe they would be less corrupt. Or is it in the blood ?

  • adrian.strydom - 2011-08-21 08:05

The Metro cops ride around in unmarked cars and in plain clothes ? Really ?

  • Kenny - 2011-08-21 08:09

i simply cannot make out this series of events.Who did what and how, in or out of a vehicle? pathetic article TBWAA

  • Kenny - 2011-08-21 08:16

An extremely confusingly written artical. We are in the gutter in more than one way.Let's do some freelance reporting. We just may improve present reporting and miss having to read such trash.

  • Kleinjan - 2011-08-21 11:25

Attempted murder?? He didn't squeeze the trigger so no attempt.

  • johnnymacza - 2011-08-21 12:22

the cops obviously provoked the shot driver and they were more than likely black.

  • umlaut - 2011-08-21 15:01

The traffic cops have built up a very bad reputation over the years. We don't believe them and the two of them can spin any story against this man. He broke a window and he got shot in the leg.? He probably got shot through the closed window, that why it broke. In a Beeld report 20-8-2011 a certain mr. Breedt wanted to report a gang shooting but the police didn't want to help him, and threatened him with arrest and that he must shut up. Another case of a mrs. Bezuidenhout that got pulled over and spit in her face and was cursed by the traffic police and handcuffed and then ordered to get on her knees and plead to be forgiven. They even took her car keys when she said she was going to report them. Many whites are victimized by the traffic police as part of their revenge on whites. When malema threatens to kill whites and the anc threatens to overtax us we can take it as a minority group--but this where helpless white individuals are selected and victimized and framed, is beyond evil and adds another notch to the Genocide scale of the whites in this country. We want the names and FACES of these criminals in the police force so that we can know who they are. They won't get fired so when they pull us off the road that we can at least phone the corruption line as we are stopped. We also need a guide how to behave and what our rights are when stopped by S/Africa's ROAD TERROR GROUP. Embassies of other countries must also circulate this to visitors to SA.

  • TJG - 2011-08-22 11:16

Anyone seen the attitudes of a lot of Metro Cops lately in JHB - disgusting. Someone needs to remind them they are there to provide a service to the public, not the other way around.
