Durban - Two gunmen shot at police officers, who were investigating a killing at hostels in KwaMashu township, outside Durban, on Friday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the shooting occurred in the early hours of Friday morning while police were responding to a call about a killing in Musa Road in A-section KwaMashu.

“While police were approaching the crime scene, two armed men opened fire on them. Police officers got out of the vehicle and returned fire, causing the suspects to flee on foot,” he said.

One of the officers injured his foot in the shootout and had to be treated at hospital, but has since been discharged. It is not clear how the officer injured himself, but Naicker confirmed that the officer had not been shot.

The dead man was 25 years old and had been shot multiple times.

“The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened at KwaMashu police station and police have launched an investigation to pursue the suspects,” said Naicker.
