Johannesburg - Four people were arrested after several unregistered private further education and training colleges were closed down by police, the police ministry said on Sunday.

Minister Nathi Mthetwa said police visited five institutions around Johannesburg and Tshwane and found four that were not registered.

"The (colleges') directors were arrested and detained at the Pretoria Central police station and they are expected to appear in court soon."

Mthethwa said those arrested could face 10 years imprisonment or be fined R250 000.

The institutions include Victory Training College, Shepperd Academy, Health Academy Institution and Central College of Business and Computer Studies.
