Durban - Despite a recent edict by National Treasury to cut down on spending, police management have blown millions of rands on a three-day jaunt to Durban for 1 500 senior police officers.

According to the Sunday Times, the accommodation bill alone was more than R3m, excluding a R490 000 gala dinner.

This was in complete defiance of National Treasury’s recent order to cut costs.

In a Sunday Independent report, police portfolio committee chairperson Annelize van Wyk questioned the costs of the lavish dinner although she did agree that the meeting was important for the officers.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega all attended the dinner and the conference.
